Description
While visiting Howard Marsh near Lake Erie in the spring, I noticed a large flock of American White Pelicans soaring above me. They are a huge waterbird and one of the largest in North America. They soar at high elevations and simply disappear from sight as they shift directions in the sky. American White Pelicans are all white on the body, with black and white wings. They have long necks, thick bodies and short legs. Some of these have a projection on their beak that grows during mating season. When I saw this flock, I starting taking photos of them. Another birder asked me what I was doing since he didn't see them. I told him there is a large flock of pelicans up there and he didn't know what I was talking about-- until they turned direction and he then saw them. He was amazed.
